Hi there, thank you for your question! GCSEs are considered year 9 to year 11. What that means is students start choosing their subjects and learning the content in Year 9. They will then sit their final exams in May-June of Year 11. I hope this helps! Let me know if you need any more information :)

GCSEs are typically studied over two years in secondary school, during Year 10 and Year 11. Year 10 is when students begin their GCSE courses, and Year 11 is when they complete the courses and take the final exams. The exams are usually taken at the end of Year 11, around May and June. Students may take a few exams early, but the bulk of assessments are done in Year 11.

Normally this exam is taken at the end of 11 grade or year even if they start preparing it in grade 10 (year 10). However, some schools may allow students to pass this test in grade 10, in this case students start preparing for it in grade 8 and 9.

You can sit a GCSE at any age but a school is unlikely to enter you before the end of Y11 because which ever grade is achieved on first entry is the one that counts on the schools figures for that year group so in order to have the best chance of achieving the best grade a student will normally sit an exam at the end of Y11.

GCSEs take place in year 11 (at the end of year 11, that is). In 2025, the first GCSE exam is at 5th May 2025. GCSEs across all exam boards will take place in May and June in 2025, as far as I understand. So, if you’re taking your GCSEs in 2025 it would be good to start revising now as they aren’t as far as they seem to be.

Typically, students begin studying their GCSE subjects in Year 10 (around age 14-15) and continue through Year 11 (around age 15-16), when they take their final exams.
