in person is a lot more effective. I have carried out tutoring online and in person. Its much easier for me to see when the student is struggling and when they're not. With online I would need to see them either communicate or I put questions in place to work out how he/she is feeling.

Face to face teaching is always better for the student. It gives the tutor a chance to see how you work as you layout your answer rather just sharing the answer once it is completed. Little points like this all add together to improve your results and final grades.

Hi, I have worked as a maths tutor 1-to-1 on line and in person . I think in person is better as there is nore eye contact. However a quaified and experienced teachrer working online is a lot better than a 1-to-1 with a person not well trained and/or experienced. You should ask both about their tutoring method just to see if they have thought it throgh. Roghtly myne is: If it is in person, the tutee can take awy all the notes; myself and the studet write in the same note pad. I explain what the concept is all about, hopefully with the use of a diagram and then start with a series of questions from the very simple right up to hard. Working slow if needed and the next problem I give depends on how they answered the last one. So concets bulid up gradually, always checking that one concept is learned and practiced before the next concept is introfuced. I also give advice with study sklls: how to take notes (the Cornell Method). How to learn notes (the Forgetting Curve), and how to set yourown practive exam (random numbers, my oen inventon). Appologies for all the detail.

I couldn't agree more! An experienced teacher, online, who knows the curriculum inside out and knows the common misconceptions and mistakes students make, is better online than an inexperienced individual on a one-to-one basis. I've too often seen parents unwittingly find unqualified tutors, who then have very little impact in improving pupil performance or confidence.

As a tutor, I'd say in -person one-to-one tuition is the most effective. However, where this is not possible, ive seen on-line working well too. Some pupils respond well from their own self motivation. Others may need some encouragement from parents. Saira Maths tutor, North London

Hi, in person tutoring has the merits and demerits in my opinion. Depend on the tutee age group, and need of the tutee, the in person tutoring may be better in some circumstances. For instance, for tutee whose attention span is low and difficult to maintain it is not ideal to opt for online tutoring. While conversely, for highly focused tutee, it may be easier for both the tutor and tutee to have their lessons online. I’ve been privileged to do both online tutoring and in person tutoring. So my honest opinion is that both have their merits and demerits which relies on who the tutee is, distance to the tutee etc.

I am a bit biased as I am on line tutor. If your tutor is using an active screen it is the same as using a whiteboard but the tutor can also send you all the boards that have been used as notes on top of the notes that they should be sending as well. A lot of people have these notes useful

From my experience as both a student and a tutor, I’ve found that both in-person and online tutoring can be effective, depending on what you’re looking for. In-person tutoring offers the benefit of direct, face-to-face interaction. You can immediately see how a student is reacting to the material, which helps in adjusting your teaching approach on the spot. I’ve worked with students where this physical presence really helped build rapport, making it easier for them to ask questions and feel engaged. There’s something about being in the same room that naturally encourages a student to focus. However, I’ve also spent a lot of time tutoring online, and there are definite advantages to that too. Online tutoring gives flexibility—both to the student and me as a tutor. Since I’m someone who likes to have the option to travel and maintain a disciplined lifestyle, online tutoring has given me the freedom to work from anywhere, whether I’m on campus, at home, or even on the move. One of the biggest concerns people often have about online tutoring is the lack of personal connection. But in my experience, using the right tools—screen sharing, collaborative whiteboards, or simply a well-structured lesson plan—can bridge that gap effectively. Since I’ve tutored students in programming, machine learning, and maths, I’ve seen how effective it can be to use technology to visualize problems and solutions. So, for me, both methods work. In-person tutoring feels more traditional and immediate, but online tutoring offers flexibility and, if done well, can be just as engaging and effective.

As a teacher, I have always considered that face to face teaching has the potential to be more effective. When dealing with an explanation of something complex, a good teacher can read in a student's face whether the issue is being understood and will respond by putting things in different ways until the light of understanding shows. Any questions needed can be asked quickly and easily dealt with immediately backed up with what I said above.

I personally make sure I follow up my student after the online classes via WhatsApp to make sure the student is doing well in class. Hi Alice I am a Private Tutor. I have tried both online and face to face. I would say I really enjoyed face to face because you can have that real life, close up feeling and human interaction. It can work well, however after using the online I found that you can still get that human interaction feeling but also there are many advantages such as, better access to resources, easier to coordinate lessons, no travel costs, no subsistence costs, no hold-ups when trying to leave the client venue or other venue, no bad smells to contend with coming from the client venue etc flies darting around the kitchen, pets crawing over you are just some of the issues Tutors have to deal with. As for the student, they also benefit from better exam training, more work coverage, no need to prepare the home for the Tutor, no travelling and so less time wated. I would say as long as the student does not have mental health issues including camera phobias etc then yeah go for the online.

Hi, it depends on what type of student you are, some students prefer face-to-face sessions, and other students prefer online sessions, they feel more comfortable and they tend to ask more questions than what they would've asked in person. In the end, it's you who decides what's better for you.

From my experience, it all depends on the person's age as well as their attitude. For younger children, an in-person tutor may be more suitable because the tutor is able to be more interactive and, if the child has issues with focus, an in-person tutor can make sure to engage them without the parents having to sit with the child constantly, during the whole tutoring lesson. For older students who are self-motivated or for adults, I would say it does not matter.

It depends with the time and availability of a teacher. With technology these days, everything you do in person can be done as well online if the pupil is well versed in technology as well. This saves time for the teacher to arrive in time for your lecture and flexible to end or do lessons at anytime suitable for both the teacher and the student. As long as it's one on one, either online or physical, I believe both are good and online having more advantages than physical.

In my experience, tutoring in person is more effective than online as face to face interaction gives a greater opportunity to read the 'feelings' of the student and respond that much better than when online. Also, I find that some students to get 'busy' on 'multitasking' during online sessions, such as playing games (especially those higher achieving students and those with short attention span).

There is no clear demarcation between the two. Normally, in-person tutoring is a traditional approach and it is generally regarded as being friendly to the learners. The advantage with in-person tutoring is that the learner would not easily get distracted, would stay focused and the proximity of the teaching/learning process would enhance their understanding of the subject matter. When it comes to online tutoring, the advantage is that the learner gets to experience a new study environment, with captivating content; this would enhance the learner's skills in digitalization and make them learn maths in a fun way. Secondly, expertise skills can be sought through online tutoring. Overall, which approach is better depends on the circumstances prevailing.

Personally, I think face to face in person tutoring would offer the most benefit as it allows the tutor to be able analyse body language as well as being able to watch them work. However, online tutoring has improved massively and the use of whiteboards mean that we can often watch the student answering questions to work out the areas they are struggling with. Online tutoring can sometimes be a little cheaper and may be more time efficient as there is no commuting time.
