As a TA at Test Teach, an 11+ tutoring agency, I have had the opportunity to work with Year 4 children preparing them for one of the most important exams of their early academic journey. My role involves helping students not only understand mathematical concepts but also develop the skills needed to apply them effectively in exam conditions. This is where my approach to teaching, along with the structured lessons and targeted homework I assign, plays a crucial role.
Each of my lessons typically last between 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the student’s needs and progress. This duration ensures that there is ample time to introduce new topics, work through examples, and address any areas of difficulty, while still allowing for review of previously covered material.
At the beginning of each lesson, I focus on reviewing the homework from the previous session, using it as a springboard to address any gaps in understanding. I believe that a clear grasp of foundational concepts is key to mastering more advanced topics. This review not only reinforces the child’s learning but also gives me insight into their progress and any specific areas where additional focus might be needed.
Once we’ve addressed homework, I introduce new mathematical concepts, ensuring that I break them down into manageable chunks. I use real-world examples wherever possible, helping students relate abstract ideas to everyday situations. I also encourage active participation, prompting students to solve problems on their own and guiding them through the thought process when they encounter difficulties.
One of the key components of my teaching methodology is the weekly homework (around 1-2 hours per week) I assign at the end of each lesson. Homework serves as an essential tool for consolidating the concepts learned during the lesson. I make sure that it is tailored to the individual student’s level, providing a balanced mix of problems that range from basic practice to more challenging questions that push their understanding.
By giving students regular, structured homework, I ensure that the learning doesn’t stop when the lesson ends. This consistent practice helps to cement concepts in their minds and develop the problem-solving skills they will need in their exams. Moreover, reviewing their homework during the next lesson allows me to track their progress and adjust my teaching plan accordingly.
I don’t just teach students how to pass the 11-plus exams or the GCSEs; my aim is to foster a deep understanding of the subject that will serve them in future academic pursuits. Whether it’s breaking down a complex algebraic problem or showing a new method to tackle geometry, I strive to help students see the bigger picture and understand how each topic connects to the next. I emphasize not just memorization of methods, but a thorough understanding of the why behind mathematical processes.
Throughout my time as a tutor, I have seen how vital confidence is in a student’s academic success. Exams can be a daunting challenge for young learners, and part of my role is to make sure they approach these tests feeling prepared and confident in their abilities. By encouraging them to take ownership of their learning and giving them the tools to solve problems independently, I help them build the resilience and problem-solving mindset that will benefit them throughout their education.
