I am a qualified Maths teacher and have taught Mathematics in secondary schools (KS3 & KS4) and as a private tutor for over 25 years. My degree in Civil Engineering (which constitutes of over 80% of Maths-related modules), and knowledge of careers in Maths gives me a good base to help students understand real-life applications and use of Maths. As a teenager, I also experienced other education systems (studying in France), which gives me another insight into different ways of teaching and learning. I am also a Numeracy specialist: I home-educated my own children at primary age, have tutored students at KS2 and had a lead role in developing Numeracy in schools (during which time I researched the impact of fluency in Numeracy and Maths).
I am passionate about Maths and it's uses in everyday life and careers - this is a topic I'm often quizzed about by my students!!
Drawing on extensive experience, I quickly assess a students ability and we can then make a plan to move forward, taking any requirements on board.
Sessions are usually a mixture of instruction and guided practice through exercises or past exam questions, using a variety of websites and resources. I also take time to know my students - their likes and dislikes.
I have experience of teaching all abilities, from those who really struggle to those aiming for a Grade 9 at GCSE!!
Students and tutees alike often mention how quickly the lesson has gone by- that's always a good sign!
