Hello, Thank you for your question! For GCSEs in the UK, a grade 4 is considered a standard pass, and a grade 5 is a strong pass. These are the benchmarks students typically aim for to demonstrate proficiency. The exact grade boundaries can vary each year depending on overall student performance and how the exam boards set the boundaries. As of now, there haven’t been any confirmed changes for the 2025 GCSEs, but it's always a good idea to keep an eye on updates from exam boards like AQA, Edexcel, or OCR. If you have any more questions or need help with your studies, feel free to ask. Good luck! Teacher Sara J

Grade boundaries fluctuates on a yearly basis. It all depends on how well pupils perform or underperform, this is one of the factors examination board adopt to standardise their threshold. For example, grade boundaries are lowered in a year that every one finds paper tough and perform below expectation and likewise, grade boundaries goes up when questions are easy and everybody is scoring higher marks.

As of my last update, the specific pass mark for GCSEs in 2025 has not been officially announced. Generally, a grade 4 is considered a standard pass, while a grade 5 is regarded as a strong pass. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, I recommend checking the official website of the relevant examination boards or the UK government's education department closer to the examination date.

Hello Dear Alis, Hope you are fine and enjoying good health. As far as your question is concerned,I have searched various websites .As per BBC reports and from other authentic reports,Pupils need a 4 for a "standard pass" and 5 for a "strong pass". While grades 1-3 technically count as a pass, many sixth forms insist on a minimum number of 5s or 6s as a condition of entry for further study. This is 2024 policy but 2025 policy is not out know.so wait and stay updated.

The number of marks to pass changes each year and depends upon how easy students find the papers. A pass is actually a grade 1 but most people assume it is a grade 4. Using last years Science exams as a benchmark it was around 25% on the Higher papers and 50% on the foundation papers. Don't worry about the score, just try and get as many marks as possible.

There is no way of knowing until the exams have been sat. Grade boundaries are based on what the candidates achieve in that particular cohort so they are not set prior to the exams. You can get some idea from just googling previous grade boundaries but it's not an exact science! Grade 4 is considered a pass and Grade 5 is considered a 'good pass'.

Since GCSEs in 2025 are after my April 2024 knowledge cut-off, I can't make specific claims about what the pass marks will be. What I can tell you is that GCSE grading typically works on a 9-1 scale in England, with grade 4 considered a "standard pass" and grade 5 a "strong pass." The exact grade boundaries are set after exams are taken and vary by subject and year.

Hi Alice! The pass mark depends on the grade boundaries each year. Therefore it will differ in 2025 to the pass mark in the 2024 GCSES. It also depends on exam board and if your child is doing foundation/higher in their subject. You can look up the past pass marks from each year to compare for an average mark.

For GCSEs in 2025, the standard pass mark is Grade 4. This means that if you achieve a Grade 4 or higher, you've met the basic requirements to move on to further education or training. The grading scale ranges from Grade 9, which is the highest, down to Grade 1, the lowest. So, while Grade 4 is the minimum you’ll want to aim for, a Grade 5 or higher is considered a strong pass.

Hi Alice. The grading system goes from a Grade 1 to a Grade 9, with 9 being the highest and roughly equivalent to a high A Star and a 1 being the lowest. The pass grade is a Grade 4. The mark required for a Grade 4 varies each year based on the grade boundaries, which are set by the respective exam boards. I'd recommend you check the past grade boundaries for the exam board which you are interested in and see what mark was needed for a 4 to get a rough idea as to what to expect the pass mark to be.

Hello Alice, The pass marks for GCSE Maths varies a little each year according to whether you are doing Foundation or Higher level maths. It also depends which exam board you are doing. To get a reasonable idea you can google, 'Grade Boundaries for GCSE maths (Edexcel) (2024)'. A grade 4 is a 'pass' these days. So for instance to get a 'pass' at higher level maths you will need approximately 25%. It doesn't sound like much, but the papers are really quite difficult these days.
