Hi Michelle,
You can try with these ones:
"El viejo y el mar" (The Old Man and the Sea) by Ernest Hemingway
"Un día de estos" by Gabriel García Márquez
"El Principito" (The Little Prince) by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
And remember that books with illustrations, will help you contextualize the text and make it easier to understand.
Good luck!

Hi Michelle, I would recommend La Zapatera Prodigiosa by Federico García Lorca. His use of Spanish is relatively easy to understand, the story is fun and charming, and it's not dauntingly long! Lorca's own story is also fascinating (if tragic) and his poems are beautiful. Enjoy!

Hi Michelle: whats your level of spanish? You can always start with short stories from latin american authors to get a hang of it: García Marquez’s Cuentos Peregrinos might be a good one or Allende’s Eva Luna, Mujeres de ojos grandes and Maridos, from Angeles Mastretta or even Laura Esquivel’s “Como agua para chocolate”.
Then if you really feel like gaming up, you could try something from Julio Cortázar, Nicolás Vallejo, More García Marquez (Crónica de una Muerte Anunciada; Relato de Un Naufrago) or even Borges… here you are going for the Hemingways of Latin American literature.

Dear Michelle
I hope you are well. Depending on your level of Spanish, I would start with easier and shorter articles. Then you can read shorter novels, like "La Sombra del Viento" or "Como Agua para Chocolate"..etc.
I hope this helps :)

Hello Michelle it depends on the level you are at in the language. I would suggest to start with short stories for kids if you are a beginner level, short novels if you are intermediate and finally an appealing novel if you are advanced my sugestions would be:
Las Fabulas de Esopo
El extraño caso del Dr. Jekyll y Mr. Hyde o Las mil y una noches
Cien años de soledad

If you are just learning get a book that is designed for you like La chica del tren. It has a limited vocabulary and it will boost your confidence. Real Spanish books are difficult to read and they the Spanish write in their peculiar way. If you an English speaker they will feel strage to our culture.

I would recommend "El Coronel no tiene quien le escribe" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It is about an elderly gentleman who lives mainly in his memories, and it's full of mystery and things understood but left unspoken. It is said that when Garcia Marquez finished writing it, he wrote the numbers of the chapters on separate scraps of paper, threw them all up in the air, and the sequence of chapters was published in the order he picked them up in! It is only about 100 pages long, but a really lovely read. Have fun! Karen

Ensayo sobre la Ceguera
by José Saramago. 1995.
It is a novel that explores a sudden epidemic of blindness affecting a modern society. The story follows a group of people who, after losing their sight, must confront the collapse of social norms and the disintegration of civilization. Through dense prose and a distinctive style, Saramago examines human nature, solidarity, and the barbarism that emerges in extreme situations. The work raises questions about morality, perception, and empathy, becoming an allegory for both physical blindness and the lack of ethical vision in society.

Sure! Here are a few easy-to-read Spanish books that I recommend:
"El Principito" by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry - A beautiful, simple story that’s loved by both children and adults. It’s a great introduction to Spanish literature.
"La Casa en Mango Street" by Sandra Cisneros - This novel tells the story of a young Latina girl growing up in Chicago. It's written in short, poetic vignettes that make it accessible and engaging.
"Cuentos de la Selva" by Horacio Quiroga - A collection of short stories set in the jungle of Misiones, Argentina. The language is straightforward and the stories are captivating.
"Mariposa" by Patricio Guzmán - A lovely short book that tells a simple yet touching story. It’s a good choice for beginners looking to practice their Spanish.
These books not only help with language learning but also offer rich stories and themes. Enjoy reading!
