Do I have to take an exam to become a Spanish tutor?

I would like to teach secondary students, but without an exam can I only give private tuition?

Hi Enric, to teach Spanish there are 2 options, you can take a university course online that will provide you with certification or if you're aiming for bigger schools (not public) then you'll need to complete an ELE course in order to get the certificate. It's similar to the TEFL for English teaching. ELE is available at Instituto Cervantes and the Universidad de Salamanca. be careful, make sure it's an official certificate from a recognized institution. Now, in order to teach at public school you'd need a degree and if you are talking about teaching in Spain then the public servant exams. Hope this helps, all the best of luck!

Hello, you have to first do a PGCE course at a University which you need at least a relevant Undergraduate degree for. I am starting the course myself in two weeks time if this helps.

For private lessons you do not need any exams. To teach at a College you can just do a short course how to be a teacher, for schools you need a PGCE, two years and then practice and pass at a school.

While a teaching course or degree can be valuable, you can certainly start teaching online without formal qualifications. However, I strongly recommend that you feel confident in your language proficiency and take the time to research and prepare your lessons in advance to ensure they are effective.

Hi Enric, Great question! While you don't necessarily need to take an exam to offer private Spanish tuition, having formal qualifications can certainly boost your credibility and confidence, especially when working with secondary students. For private tutoring, many platforms and students value experience, fluency, and teaching skills over formal exams. However, if you're looking to teach within schools or other institutions, you may need to meet specific qualifications or certification requirements. If you're aiming to tutor secondary students, focusing on building your subject knowledge, understanding the curriculum, and offering tailored lessons for exam preparation (such as GCSE or A-Level) can be very beneficial. Best of luck with your tutoring journey! Best regards, Rocío
