A great way to start is to watch Chinese-speaking news, TV shows or even movies to familiarise yourself with the language first to get a feel of the pronunciation and different tones.

To learn Chinese, good starting for it is to learn from local people and get some interest in the same time. Secondly, you can set up target for your progress. Gradually you will learn from basic to medium level

I would say just have a go and find an approach that suits your learning style - some like to learn phrase by phrase, some prefer to get a good foundation in grammar, syntax etc i.e. the theoretical side of things, most respond well to a combination. Finding your motivation is key - maybe an area of interest as a starting point, setting little targets and finding a tutor/class/app that matches your style, and...a lot of patience!

I highly recommend you read Chinese comics books which my sons learn a lot of vocabularies and idioms from them. They are very efficient.

The Chinese characters are the scary part to many beginners. But don't forget, Chinese language is pictographic, many of them are images of what they represent. Knowing them will help you recognize and remember the words. Chinese is also a tonal language, which is difficult to handle at first. You can start practising it like you do with music.
