I was an English Professor in Chinese Universities. I have two and half years' working experience teaching Chinese in Belfast, Northern Ireland. To teach Chinese listening and reading skills, I would take the following steps: 1. pre-listening/reading exercises to warm up; 2. while-listening/reading exercises; 3. post-listening/reading exercises. In teaching vocabulary/grammar/speaking skills/writing skills, the main teaching procedure would be: 1. warming-up; 2. presentation; 3. controlled exercises; 4. communicative exercises. Chinese is a tonal language, Pinyin is used to mark the pronunciation, so Pinyin teaching and practice of tones is necessary at certain stage of learning. The Chinese culture introduction will be done if the language learning requires.
