Find a private tutor for summer lessons
Tutors don't rest in summer
The web has an infinite network where you can find anything at any time. So finding tutors or a private tuition will not be a problem for you.
We have prepared a list of the most important factors for finding tutors.
- Specific subjects: There are tutors who do a general review of any subject. Our advice is to evaluate and detect the subjects that are more difficult for you. Then, apply the filter and find a tutor that specialised in those subjects.
- Reviews: One of the most important things when looking for private tuition is reviews. Since they are generated by former students, reviews are an invaluable resource for checking a tutor's performance.
- Flexible schedules: Online tutors also have flexible schedules. You should check if their schedule and your schedule are completely compatible. If they are, don't delay in contacting them!
- Cost: Depending on the tutor, they charge more or less money per hour. If you are not willing to pay 20 pounds for a tutor who has a 5 star rating, you are sure to find one for a lower price and with the same quality.
- Their description: Depending on how they describe themselves, you will understand that whether they are a good match for you. The way we express ourselves with a character limit says more about us than we think.
- Group or solitary: There are private tutors who create group lessons via Teams, or Zoom. Consider all the above elements and see whether you prefer to share a class with a couple of other students.
- FindTutors: You can easily find all of the above using FindTutors' filters.
Take summer lessons: don't sleep!
Taking private lessons during the summer may seem daunting, as understandably, most students want to relax during the holidays. But the summer is a great time to prepare for the new school year without the extra stress of school homework and deadlines.
- Choose a compatible timetable: Create a timetable that you know you will stick to and work it around your other commitments.
- Change environments: You're at home, so if you have a garden or terrace you can also have your lessons there. You just need a different environment to the one you have during the school year.
- Treat yourself: Make your favourite drink or snack to enjoy during the lesson, it can be an element that helps you to enjoy your summer lessons more.
- Don't sleep in: If you have chosen a morning schedule, stick to it. Think that later you will have the whole day to spend doing whatever you want. If you have chosen an afternoon schedule, do not take a two-hour nap, the ideal nap is 26 minutes. If you sleep more than an hour, you may become disoriented.
- Don't get distracted: You can indulge yourself, but don't overdo it. At your desk should be your computer, the material you will use and the drink you want (to avoid going to the kitchen every 5 minutes). Leave your mobile phone in another room and if it can be switched off, the better.
- Apps to avoid being distracted: If you can't or don't want to leave your mobile in another room, below are a couple of apps that will prevent you from looking at it every 5 minutes.
→ Forest: This is an app that encourages you to stay off your phone. You plant a virtual tree, and it grows the longer you stay off your phone. However, if you exit the app to do something else on your phone, the tree dies. This can be a fun and effective way to prevent distractions during private tuition or revision.
→ Freedom: This is an app that blocks distracting websites and apps across all your devices. You can schedule sessions where certain websites or apps will be blocked, helping you focus on your private lessons.
Advice from a former student to current students
During my studies in secondary school, I have been able to see that private tuition is very important when it comes to understanding a subject.
So if you work constantly but don't get the expected results, don't be alarmed, your school teacher's explanations may not work for you. Here are some key points to remember:
- Extra lessons: If it's the teacher's explanation that's not working for you, look for private lessons from a private tutor. This happened to me with maths in the 3rd year of secondary school. A private tutor's job is to explain concepts until you understand it, unlike a school teacher that has to go with the rythm of the whole class.
- You are not a grade: You should not feel like your grades define your worth. There is a lot more to life than passing an exam.
There are some subjects that will serve us for the rest of our lives and in which basic knowledge is necessary. But everyone has a different kind of intelligence. You can be very logical and work brilliantly in maths but then lack creativity, and vice versa.
Use these tips about online tuition and studying to help you get ahead before the new school year starts. But if you don't, don't panic, remember that there is life beyond lessons.
