The internet is undoubtedly one of the most popular resources available for those who want to learn English or for English speakers who want to improve their comprehension skills.
Blog posts, videos, online courses, well-designed slides, dictionaries; the possibilities seem endless!
Perhaps it is this ocean of choice that leaves some students feeling over-loaded and more unsure than when they started. For effective learning however, a good book however can be a learner's best friend. By a good book I mean a book that grabs our interest and keeps us hooked.
Classic novels or short stories do this best. Reading news stories or non-fiction books can be valuable of course, yet our imagination does not become involved the way it does when we enter the realm of fiction. With a story, new worlds are opened and our imaginations stirred.
We might not realise it, but while reading we are actually practicing our grammar! On top of that, with every page we flick through, our vocabulary expands. Reading however is a habit, and habits must start somewhere. At first, we might struggle to find a reading routine, and get into it. Choosing a 20-minute time slot for ourselves is a realistic goal that even people with busy schedules can meet.
Reading in bed has undoubtedly been a favourite hobby for many over the years, a hobby which is part and parcel of many people's nightly routine. Lights out at 11pm means we hop into bed at 10:40pm and jump into a good read. There are dozens of famous names whose books make up the long list of classics, a few of whom I will just mention here and now;
Ernest Hemingway, Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde, Edgar Allen Poe, Joseph Conrad, Arthur Conan Doyle, Rudyard Kipling.
Each of these authors have a number of classic works well-worth reading. And it´s true that nothing beats a good (especially a 'classic') book.
If you´re in need of English tuition, whether that be for an exam or if you´d like to delve deeper into some of these classic books, I am available as a private English tutor. Please feel free to reach out for further informatiion.
