Subjects: Mathematics, English, Geography, History, Languages, Science, Study Skills, Test Preparation, and Writing. Tutoring for students of all ages (children of all ages, university students, and adults).
I have an M.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of St Andrews (2021) and a Bachelors in Mathematics and Classical Studies (Latin and Greek literature and history) from Duke University.
I like to start tutoring sessions with students by asking them what their assignments are for the next day and for the week, and what quizzes and exams will be given at school over the next 1-2 weeks. I also like to ask the mid-term exam schedule and final exam schedule. Additionally, I will ask if any research papers or projects will be due and when each is due. This helps students to keep a calendar of assignments, papers, projects, quizzes, and exams. I also assess the approaches to learning that work best for each student. I assess whether a student responds better to verbal instruction, visual demonstration, or hands on activities. An appropriate approach for teaching and tutoring is developed for each student.
Using Zoom or Microsoft Teams can have extra benefits for the tutoring and learning process. By being able to share documents, PowerPoint presentations, training videos, and other learning materials via Zoom/Microsoft Teams directly onto the screen in front of a student during tutoring, the student is able process new material in a highly visual way and with listening skills not always possible in the classroom environment or in 1x1 in person sessions. Tutoring sessions can also be recorded via online conferencing platforms and this is another beneficial resource made possible by online meeting platforms. Students can watch the recordings of previous sessions if they think re-watching the lessons would be helpful. I have 12 years of tutoring experience and have developed techniques to help students grow more comfortable with challenging subjects and to help improve performance at school.
