I like to start tutoring sessions with students by asking them what their assignments are for the next day and for the week, and what quizzes and exams are in the coming weeks. Additionally I will ask if any research papers or projects will be due and when they are due. This will help student to keep a calendar of assignments, papers, projects, quizzes, and tests.

I like for students to communicate to me what subjects or concepts are troubling them. Sometimes that is difficult for a student to communicate. I will ask students to show me examples from textbooks or assignments that were confusing to them. I will also work through examples with students to assess where confusion is occurring and where the troubles are.

I also assess the approaches to learning that work best for each student. I assess whether a student responds better to verbal instruction, visual demonstration, or hands on activities. An appropriate approach for teaching and tutoring is developed for each student.
