One strategy I like to use with my students is allowing them to read their material before the class starts.
Once our session begins, my teaching method is trying as hard as possible to simplify the information and explain the basics of historical concepts. The rest of the session would be back and forth interaction between students and me to keep them energetic and focused on the material.
