I have extensive experience in History, having studied it for over 10 years in education through school, college and university. The format of my lessons are a fairly simple: starter where the lesson subject is introduced/ a recap of the lesson from a previous lesson.
Then the main part of the lesson is the main topic where I introduce the topic and set the lesson objectives. Then either teach the subject through power points or easy, concise bullet points or if it is answering an essay question then we dissect an essay and go about the best way to lay your points out clearly.
The teaching continues with three topics and a mini-plenary and then at the end of the lesson there is game involving what we have learnt to consolidate the learning. This involves a Q and A sessions so the student can understand fully what has been taught.
My experience is that lessons which focus of just talking and watching presentations for the whole session can be monotonous and is not the most effective form of learning. Instead you need interactive learning with dialogue between tutor and student so the lesson can be of most value. This can involve puzzles, games like Kahoot or short videos to aid in learning.
Throughout the course of the lessons I will have structure of what is being taught and makes sure it ticks the boxes of the student so they can complete their target whether that be for an exam or for their self.
