I am an experienced Japanese language tutor with over 15 years of teaching experience and two MA degrees. I previously taught at the University of Sussex and currently tutor at London Metropolitan University, where I teach Translation Studies at MA level.
Alongside academic teaching, I have worked as a conference interpreter and translator, created film subtitles, and conducted interviews with musicians. This professional experience allows me to bring real-world language use into my lessons, helping students understand both practical communication and cultural nuance.
I have taught a wide range of students, from 9-year-olds to mature adults, and welcome learners of all levels — from complete beginners to advanced students. I have supported students in achieving goals such as entering university to study Japanese, relocating to Japan, and passing GCSE, A-level, and JLPT examinations.
With a background in English Literature and Creative Writing, I also enjoy teaching literary translation and exploring Japanese and English literature with advanced learners. For students interested in academic writing or critical analysis, I can also support the development of essay structure, argumentation, and bilingual expression.
My lessons are structured, supportive, and tailored to each student’s goals, whether academic, professional, or personal. I place strong emphasis on clarity, pronunciation, and confidence in speaking, while ensuring grammar and vocabulary are built on solid foundations. I aim to create a focused yet encouraging learning environment where students can build confidence and make steady progress, while developing long-term independence and genuine enjoyment of the language, at a comfortable and sustainable pace.
