Friendly, enthusiastic, experienced maths specialist with experience of children with anxiety and a dislike of maths

Advert description
I am trained as a maths mastery lead and tutor children in Key Stages 1, 2 and 3.

Understanding 'why' is integral to learning and applying maths skills as well as the links between concepts - I get so many 'oh, I didn't know that!' moments in relation to key, often simple, core concepts that children have missed through lessons in school.

This is particularly evident in KS3 where teaching can move on quickly without opportunities to revisit learning and the curriculum continues to broaden. Children can lose their confidence in asking questions and admitting that they don't understand amongst a greater breadth of peers. Anxiety about being 'left behind' grows and the enjoyment and motivation decreases further.

My priority is to completely change this and get children back on track and (almost!) enjoy maths. An important aspect of this is the way in which I teach - there is no expectation that children will be correct all the time but a high expectation that they listen hard and communicate about what they are doing in the lesson.

I prompt children all the time so they don't feel alone and model finding solutions myself, especially if the child is beginning to show they don't understand. This gives them the confidence to have a go themselves as we are working together and they know it doesn't matter if they feel they've not quite got it yet.

An advantage of tutoring is being able to grab different resources to support the learning. Applying learning to real life concepts or situations makes much more sense. We often raid the fruit bowl during lessons - make sure you're stocked up if we're online!

Let me know how I can help - I'm very flexible and adaptable. We can do one off lessons to support ongoing learning, 4 or 6 weeks of sessions, termly or ongoing - it's up to you!

Take care, Andrew
