Advert description
I have extensive experience teaching international students English at an academic level. I assisted them in meeting the expected level of English necessary to achieve their qualification. I specialised in helping students to gain knowledge and understanding of subject specific vocabulary, as well as optimise their written submissions in terms of structure, argument, referencing and proofreading.
As a teacher I am patient and cognizant of the fact that all students are going to be at different levels. It is our role as teachers to meet students where they are in their learning journey. I initially will focus on conversation level English as having a basic foundation that will allow students to interact with English speakers is going to give them a pathway for practice, which will be vital for their listening and speaking skills.
I always try and focus a lesson around the personal interests and passions of a student so that they will be more engaged with the grammar point I am trying to teach. Being able to talk about what is personal to us is a great motivator to learn a language. As a students progresses things like articles relevant to their goals or subject of interest. For example, I may ask a biology student to read an article about cell division and then pick out the main points that the article expresses. In order to check comprehension I may ask a student to rewrite those points in their own words.
I do not always correct all mistakes that are made, especially for a beginner as it can sometimes be discouraging. However, if the error is persistent then I will make sure that a student is corrected. Initially however, it is important that a students finds a sense of confidence in using the language.
