I have over 40 years teaching experience in English literature and language especially at G.C.S.E and A level. I combined this with being and examiner as I believe that knowing the nuances of what the various exam boards require is really useful information to pass onto your students. I am also a qualified counsellor and very aware how difficult the subject can be technically and how this can diminish the confidence of the student and become stressful For me the key to good teaching lies in the passion you have for your subject. I don't believe in just ticking boxes but try to instil in my students a genuine interest in the subject and the learning process. During my extensive teaching background, I have taught a range of abilities and the mutual relationship we create whereby I listen and respond to their ideas as well as providing my own perspectives and knowledge, empowers the student to think for themselves in an informed, safe environment. I have taught literally thousands of young people over my teaching career and the highest compliment I received was from an ex pupil from 30 years ago who asked me to teach her son who had given up on English . I did and he went from a 3 to an 8 but for me and his parents, he grew in confidence and developed a genuine interest in the subject.
