I do a primary assessment in understanding language and structure to ascertain the student's standard and possible grade. It also helps me to understand their strengths and weaknesses. I then plan a programme of study and each lesson has an aim and learning objective. I then set targets and after each session, they have specific questions based on what we have studied. They need to either verbally or in written form show that they have understood the material.
I have copious worksheets,O H T's ,past exam papers and recommended study guides etc based on 35 years of teaching.
At the end of every half term they are set a task or exam paper to complete. I then mark it as an examiner and assess their potential grade. So far I have had no one who has gained less than a 5 and most improve upon their grade.
I try to mould the work to match the students modalities and to make the lesson engaging and often fun. I also have a background in counselling which really helps me in understanding the student's stress and anxiety. I like to think that my study sessions are a safe, creative space.
