A New York conservatory-trained cellist with a passion for teaching and attention to details

Advert description
Alex Lavine has concertized extensively throughout North America and Europe. Recent performances have brought him to venues such as Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the DiMenna Center, and Bohemian National Hall. An avid chamber musician, Alex has collaborated with Carmit Zori, Ara Gregorian, Hye-Jin Kim, Charles Neidich, Kwan Yi, Colin Carr, Zvi Plesser, and Emanuel Gruber. He has been a regular participant in the Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival, was a 2021 laureate of the Lillian Fuchs Chamber Music Competition and coached with Todd Phillips, Bella Hristova, and Sharon Robinson at the New York String Orchestra Seminar.

A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and Indiana University, Alex has sat as principal cellist of the MSM Camerata Nova, Philharmonia, and the IU Chamber Orchestra. He is a member of the Brooklyn Chamber Orchestra and was selected as a member of the New Carolina Sinfonia’s coming inaugural season.

Passionate about the music of his generation, Alex served as cellist of Indiana University’s New Music Ensemble, giving premieres of works by Eric Nathan and Jeremy Podgursky. He was additionally selected by David Dzubay to participate in a recording of Julius Eastman’s The Holy Presence of Joan d’Arc. In April of 2023, Alex was joined by Matthew Schultheis for the composer’s premiere of Omniscience: Four Studies for Cello and Piano, and will premiere Yue Chen’s string quartet When the Consciousness Burning, which won the Manhattan School of Music’s Prize for String Quartet Composition.

A devoted educator, Alex has been a faculty member at the Opportunity Music Project since 2021 and also maintains a private teaching studio. He was co-founder and Director of Marketing and Development for Bloomington Connect, an organization dedicated to the training of artist-citizens in often overlooked venues. He was previously on faculty at the Larchmont Music Academy, served as a teaching assistant to Julia Lichten at the Meadowmount School of Music, and has given masterclasses at the East Carolina University School of Music.

Alex’s mentors have included Julia Lichten, David Geber, Eric Kim, Emanuel Gruber, Jeffrey Solow, and Ara Gregorian. He recently moved to London where he is pursuing further studies at the Royal Academy of Music with Hannah Roberts.
