Advert description
I have been mentoring for the last 14 years and I am a Fully Qualified Youth & Community Worker, I have also been on other relevant training courses i.e. Tutoring in the Services of Young People at Surrey University. When I meet young people I ask a lot of questions to see how they are progressing in their lives and what it is they want to do. Between us we can then create a plan and over the time we have available can ensure that the plan is carried out. Currently through Surrey Care Trust I have been mentoring a young lad who was 15 when I met him (now 17 years old). He goes to a Boarding School and lives in a small Surrey Village with little transport links and so his father has to drive him anywhere he needs/wants to go. I saw him weekly face to face on a Saturday morning and after 1 year I now see him every two weeks. I see him as a family friend now as the mentoring through Surrey Care Trust comes to an end after 1 year. However during the time I have been meeting with him I have raised just about £1,000 initially for him to attend a Rotary Youth Leaders Course which he really enjoyed and gave him a great deal of confidence. The rest of the money is going towards him going with his school to Eswatini in South Africa spending time on a trek in the bush and then working for 5 days on a School project and then a couple of days on Safari.
I have enjoyed chatting to him and he is a changed young man now as the process is one of giving him a great deal of confidence. When asked what he gets out of the sessions is that it is someone he can talk to and a person who takes interest in him. He has no mother and Dad is 70 years old.
This is but one example of what I have been able to do there are many others that I have helped over the 14 years of doing this.
