Advert description
Hi I'm John, a second year maths student studying at Durham University. I have always had a love of maths and often studied it in my free time, making use of various YouTube channels, the odd masterclass, etc. Had I relied solely on school, I doubt I would have done nearly as well in my exams or at uni. Now I find helping others do the same, whether it's filling in some gaps or starting a new topic, to be really rewarding.
I started tutoring on my gap year back in 2021. Since then I've had students ranging from needing help with 2 digit multiplication in primary, to sitting their advanced highers (A level equivelant) in their final year. Though in general I prefer to take students learning N5/GCSE or above.
When I teach I prefer to keep my lessons as student led as possible to ensure that what you're learning is useful. In practice this entails things like me teaching in areas you feel less confident in or maybe us looking through a past paper and finding some questions you're not familiar with. I also like to keep the lessons as understanding based as possible. I find students not only remember 'tools' better when they understand them but also better recognise when to use a given 'tool' to solve a problem.
I'm most familiar with the Scottish exam board (the SQA) having studied in Scotland. Though I find that in general I'm capable of teaching the maths content at secondary school level of all exam boards. With that being said, if there is anything that I haven't come across before I'm more than happy to read up on it in advance. Read less
