Cambridge Graduate Course in Medicine Student able to teach Maths, Chemistry, Biology and provide exam and revision techniques

I am currently a student at the University of Cambridge studying on the Cambridge Graduate Course in Medicine. Importantly, I feel that I have the necessary knowledge to tutor mathematics, chemistry and biology up to GCSE level. I am an experienced tutor previously employed by a school as an after-school tutor providing one-to-one and small group maths and chemistry tutoring. The sciences and maths have always been my favourite subjects and were also the ones that I received the highest marks for at GCSE and A-Level. My Natural Sciences degree allowed me to continue studying parts of Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Physics I enjoy most to degree level, graduating in 2019 with first class honours. This, plus my more recent pre-clinical medicine teaching, provides me with a strong interdisciplinary understanding of these subjects which I have found to be useful to provide context, which in turn helps with understanding the topic.

I believe that as a tutor my role is to improve confidence as well as skill as, in my opinion, this is key to achieving full potential. This will be done through providing structured, interactive and informative sessions which aim to both consolidate previous learning and extend their understanding and knowledge (and hopefully their enjoyment of the subject!). I find it very rewarding to see my tutees grasp something that they had previously found challenging and to see the positive effect it has on their self-belief.

I believe that it is important that each session is tailored to the individual. My experience as a tutor allows me to make quick, informed decisions about how to adapt the session in order to achieve maximum progress. I always make sure that I have read and understood the relevant exam board specification to ensure that I deliver the information and skills required for exam success.

I strongly feel that engagement, encouragement and enjoyment are essential for acquiring, understanding and retaining new skills and knowledge. Therefore, my sessions will be interactive and include progressive tasks allowing application and practice. I try to make my tutees comfortable in my sessions through reassurance and communication, with us both asking questions throughout - I am ready to explain things in different ways until it is understood!
