Retired teacher and Published author, experienced tutor interested in working with primary school students to support learning

I have a M Counseling degree and a BA in Early Childhood Education. I have worked with students pre school through high school. I supervised volunteer tutors for an after school study program for families in transitional housing. I have completed a 9 month program to write a book and have been published in two anthologies. I enjoy supporting the craft and skills of reading and writing including vocabulary development, and strengthening grammar and spelling. I believe that imagination is a vital part of reading and writing and encourage students to create their own stories as well as study the variety of storytelling. I introduce a concept at the beginning of each session, for example blends used in phonics or the author's purpose in writing a story. We review and discuss this concept by looking at examples and practicing activities which support the theme. Then we read a story, complete questions and answers about the text, We often close with spelling words. I encourage interaction between the student and myself and use a variety of learning styles. My hope is that sessions are fun and productive.
