Advert description
I am a very good and clear communicator with a wide and deep knowledge of the English language and of British culture and history. I teach in a way that is effective, exciting and fun, and I am highly skilled at helping students attain their academic goals.
As well as a teacher I have also been a professional documentary-maker for many years and my films have won multiple awards, including a BAFTA, the UK's most coveted television award. I have researched, written and directed many of these films myself, and worked on some very high-level productions. With world-leading scholar, Professor James Shapiro (Columbia, New York) I made a 3 part Shakespeare series for the BBC. With Professor Marcus de Sautoy (Oxford University) I made a film about Renaissance scientist Nicolaus Copernicus. With Professor David Olusoga (Manchester University) I directed the first 2 episodes in a major BBC series on British history ('Union with David Olusoga'). And many others.
My university, Oxford, is currently ranked number one in the world in the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) 'World University Rankings'. I achieved a First Class Honours degree in English Language & Literature from Oxford - the highest degree level that can be attained. So my own academic standards are extremely high, and I am very proficient at bringing out the best in students, and helping them to attain their full academic potential.
