I like to incorporate a lot of the studying techniques that I find effective in my lessons. This includes continuous but light workloads so that the student can stay in touch with all their concepts without feeling stressed about deadlines and completion targets. I also find that this helps me not lose focus while studying or learning a new concept. However, practice is key in 11 Plus, and so closer to exams I find mixed bag timed and untimed worksheets very effective. The thought of an exam can be daunting to many, but being a younger tutor, I believe I can engage and connect with students through relatable analogies and other shared experiences and make the subject slightly more tolerable.
Of course, if any student prefers another method of studying/learning, I can adapt my methods to make sure they enjoy the lesson ang get the most out of it.
As for experience, I have worked with several NGOs and volunteering agencies in the past, such as Action Tutoring in the UK, where I conducted after-school lessons with students eligible for pupil premium funding. I worked with three Year 7 students, using personalised lessons to guide them through the topics they struggled with in school. While I lived in India, I worked with organisations such as the 'Apne Aap Women's Collective', 'Read to India' and the 'Salaam Balak Foundation', where I helped tutor underprivileged children aged 5-16, who often lived in red-light districts. I have worked online as well as in person, and am experienced with planning and executing educational sessions. Despite all this experience tutoring with organisations, my true tutoring experience came from the countless hours I spent helping my younger sister with her school work, especially in subjects like maths, with which she struggled. This built up my patience, which is essential while tutoring, and helped me learn how to explain difficult concepts effectively, through analogies and other techniques.
Experience has taught me that the most important part of tutoring is an ability to look at the concepts from a student’s point of view, because I know learning something for the first time and explaining the same thing having studied it for many years are very different things. Hence, I remain adaptive and constantly look for innovate ways to personalise lessons and explain concepts using real-life or simple to understand examples.
Thank you and hope to meet you soon!
