Richard Hannington

I specialize in helping students succeed at the graded theory exams and the composition component of O and A level music exams. My goal is not to be merely theoretical but to provide musicians with practical musical skills that can be applied creatively to performance, composition, songwriting, and improvisation. I also teach orchestration and arranging.

I like to start each lesson with a review to solidify prior knowledge. We then learn new skills and apply them immediately, either to exercises or ongoing composition projects. Students under my tuition have written sonatas, movie scores, musicals, songs and symphonic pieces.

I have a PhD in Theory from the University of California, Santa Barbara. I have written music for stage, screen and concert stages. I have taught at universities and secondary schools in the US and the UK.

Most of all, I like connecting my students with the goals they need to succeed in their chosen musical interests; all lessons are tuned to the needs and aspirations of the student.
