I specialise in all painting mediums, from watercolour to oils, acrylic and fresco. I can also help students with sculptural approaches, such as model-making and working with clay. Stop-motion Animation is a subject I have taught frequently; with the most basic, free software it is accessible and can stimulate any project. I emphasise drawing from observation and portraiture as a kind of foundation to all other aspects of art-making, along with an understanding of art history and contemporary practices.

My lessons are very much tailored to the each student’s needs and abilities. I always have a ‘lesson’ in mind, with a particular medium and contextual references. However, it’s important to be flexible and see how the student responds. I often begin with a quick demonstration of the medium or technique being taught, followed by several short exercises for the student, so that within one session a number of 'mistakes' can be made and learned from. It's important for me to strike a balance between a formal or technical lesson and the student's personal interests and natural mode of expression. I will always work with the student's areas of interest, with the aim of expanding and furthering those topics, especially through looking at artists, recommending books, films and other relevant sources.

If teaching from my studio I can provide access to various materials, such as brushes, oils and canvas. If teaching at the student's home I can bring mediums such as watercolour, paper, charcoal. Wherever the location, we will be resourceful with what is available.
