My aim is to help you with the areas that you find tricky so that you don't end up despising the subject! Honestly, growing up maths was never my strong point but as I learnt different learning styles and started to understand it better, it became one of my favourite lessons! Furthermore maths is in everything - I have unfortunately found this out during the statistics part of my psychology degree, there truly is no escaping it! I am happy to listen to the learning methods that work best for you but my main teaching style is quite methodical. I have found that the best way to understand a tricky topic is to break it down and learn it bit by bit so that it becomes a lot less scary! In previous times I have liked to keep my lessons as cheerful as they can be so that our lessons are something that you look forward to rather than loathe! With younger students, I am happy to go at their pace and not load too much information at once - might be a few games in the lessons every so often :)
I am currently in the final year of my child psychology degree, hoping to go on and complete a master's specialising in child development in September. My degree has enabled me to truly understand the distinctive needs and requirements that children have to be able to successfully learn at different ages, and this can be applied through my teaching! I am a caring and understanding individual, so I can listen to what the student struggles with a consequently tackle these challenges in a fun way to prevent any topics becoming too tedious! Every student is unique, so I understand that perhaps a method that would work for one student would be difficult for another - I am happy to adapt to each student's learning methods to enable the most success out of my lessons.
One thing that I believe learning should be is fun! I intend to make my lessons engaging so that my students can look forward to Tuesday's after school maths, whether this is through multiplication bingo or more! Lastly, for the older students, I am happy to go through marking criteria and exam style questions as practice really does make perfect.
I have previously been a maths tutor for the 11+, as well as helping out students preparing for GCSE psychology. One moment that I hold close to my heart is where I worked with a student who struggled with her reading, she despised it! We worked together once a week and found methods that worked for her, by the end of our time not only was she back up to the required reading level of her school age, but she would also show me books that she had read by herself at the weekend!
