I believe that music, and the arts in general, should play an essential part in human development, whether as a child or an adult. Being involved in music - learning, playing, composing, listening - has enormous benefits for the soul, for mental, physical and emotional health. And I believe that this has never been more important.

For 30 years I ran the music department in a small independent school, teaching children aged 4 to 13. This gave me a wealth of experience in the classroom and with individual and small group teaching, and I have learnt much about how to get the best out of aspiring musicians, of any ability, from beginner recorder to grade 6 clarinet.

In a nutshell:
- patient, supportive listener
- praise more effective for progress than criticism
- student at the centre of the lesson
- structured lessons (warm-up, technical work, development exercises, pieces)
- progress at student's pace
- preparation for exams (ABRSM, Trinity) if wanted, and when ready
- theory to ABRSM Grade 5
- regular and transparent communication

Please contact me to discuss your musical needs, to see if I am the right tutor for you/your child, and to arrange a first meeting/trial lesson.

Paul taught me recorder, clarinet, and choral singing between the ages of 7 and 13, and I began learning each of these instruments with him. During his teaching, I achieved merits or distinctions in ABRSM exams, and later went on to reach Grade 8 in clarinet. Paul is highly skilled at these instruments and also encouraged me to perform, both in groups and with piano accompaniment. I feel very fortunate to have had Paul as a teacher. His care for both music and his pupils is evident in his teaching style. He quickly notices when something isn’t quite right and explains things patiently and clearly. I would happily recommend him to anyone starting (or looking to progress in) their musical journey, especially children.

Paul responds:
Thank you so much, Sarah, for your review and recommendation. Lucy is an exceptional musician, coureous, dedicated and extremely hardworking, which ensured that teaching her clarinet and recorder was nothing other than a delight.

Paul created a warm atmosphere which helped me develop musically. He was patient and kind when I was tough on myself for not getting things right which allowed me to keep working on my technique and ultimately my love of music. When I first met Paul I couldn’t place a full piece of music confidently and now I can. I have the tools to play clarinet fluently and the patience to trust myself.

Thank you so much for your lovely review, Taylor. I am thrilled by how far you developed as a clarinettist and musician during your time with me, and I am honoured to have helped instill and nurture your love of music.
