I like to begin with a conversation about the areas of maths that my student is struggling with most, and about any upcoming tests they may have. From there, I tailor my sessions to begin targeting the subjects my student finds most difficult. First, I explain the topic in depth using an interactive whiteboard. Throughout this I provide worked examples to be completed together with me, and independently by the student. For the next several weeks after this topic has been covered thoroughly, I add starter questions on this topic so that the techniques we have explored are better committed into the students long term memory.
Having had tutoring experience for the past four years, I know that every student is unique, and that one way of teaching for one student may not work for another. This is part of the job that I find most rewarding - I love taking time to find out which explanations allow my student to make sense of the content I’m teaching. And above all, I care most about teaching my students that Maths is not about the answers, it’s all about the method! The method is not only where the majority of marks are picked up in exams, but also where all the underlying mathematical understanding is achieved.
I am happy to set up a trial session at your earliest convenience, and am available for multiple sessions per week if needs be - during the week and the weekend. I look forward to hearing from you :)
