Marie Cairns

As an English instructor and literacy lead, my main objective is to create a safe space so that my students can feel comfortable to make mistakes and ask questions. After all, making mistakes is how we learn!

I like to try to gamify lessons to keep pupils engaged while maintaining a level of rigour suitable for their year/grade level. I believe it’s important to challenge students while keeping the material accessible and that in some way connects to the student’s life and prior knowledge.

I also try to incorporate culturally relevant material into my curricula so that my pupils can both identify with and learn from diverse cultures and others’ experiences.
In order to build civically engaged, critical thinkers, and life-long learners, I believe in a dynamic whereby I am the facilitator and my students, the arbiters of their own learning, having the autonomy necessary in their own learning to achieve their academic goals.

I am passionate about serving those who are struggling and striving to be the best they can be, so let’s get started!
