My lessons always start with what you want I to do that day, or if we’d had a prior lessons we could discuss what you’d like to do the next time we meet so I can prepare some equipment we might need. I like to have sessions dedicated to either practical or theory. If we have a practical lesson this will be very hands on with painting where I show you classical and contemporary painting techniques and allow us to try work with other materials (pencil, charcoal, oil pastel) to influence our mark making for paintings. This is a time to explore painting and mark making and not necessarily have an amazing finished piece. In theory we can discuss artists that influence the work you do and look deeper into their practice and ethos. It would act as an informal art history class. I would also show you how to talk about your own work either in a presentation or just conversationally, including your personal artistic inspirations. These lessons are more fluid and don’t need to follow a rigid structure. Just because I specialise in painting does not mean I will restrict the practical classes to painting only - we can work on sculpture, print, illustration and other tangents of art making.
