I have worked for over ten years as a performing musician in the UK and across Europe, as part of both amateur and professional productions. I hold an MMus in Composition and Artistic Research with Distinction from the Royal Northern College of Music.
My instrumental tuition has primarily been for pupils between the ages of five and fifteen: supporting their work towards exams, developing live performance skills and helping them to understand elements of music theory as a basis of their learning. Using the syllabi of exam boards such as Rockschool as a guide, I aim to employ an effective and flexible approach to learning, which balances the development of instrumental technique with allowing students to customise their learning where applicable. I am very fortunate that several of my students have gone on to further their education in music both academically and vocationally at institutions such as the Royal Northern College of Music.
Alongside instrumental tuition and with my own specialisms to offer, I would be particularly interested in exploring aspects of song writing and composition skills with students who this may appeal to. Since beginning to sing at a young age and now working with choirs as a professional, I have nurtured a love and understanding of the voice as an essential means of expression. I would welcome more opportunities to inspire others to sing together. I also have experience with various forms of digital recording software (Ableton and Logic), production tools and other music technology through my work as a recording bass guitarist.
Above all, my passion lies in encouraging the abilities of individual students in an environment that is positive, hardworking and supportive to all levels of skill.
