I tailor lessons to the needs, abilities and interests of each individual student. I look to spark interest in the subject and provide students with things to do in their spare time. The education system does not measure or reward intelligence. It rewards good behaviour, short term memory and a clever approach to assessments. A real interest in the subject is much more rewarding and helps the education process to be enjoyable and easy. I look to stimulate interest while also helping students to succeed at their assessments.
Lessons can range from conversations, note taking, bullet point information and memory training, to recommendations for books, films, documentaries and online videos. Students learn in different ways and they should be encouraged to explore different methods of learning to see what suits them best. In preparation for exams throughout my education I often used different coloured pens and highlighters to go through notes. My best trick to remember key information was to make initialisations. For example, if I wished to remember the last 5 Prime Minesters of the UK I would take the first letter of each of their surnames and put them together. I would then write this multiple times and practice writing out what each letter stood for. There are many other tips and tricks to help jog your memory when you need to - but this one helped me the most.
Giving yourself the best chance to understand something and to succeed in a pressurised situation like an exam is up to the student. Good teaching and sound advice costs little time and effort from a thoughtful teacher. Many students do not receive the best guidance from teachers at school because their teachers are often stressed, overworked and are juggling too many responsibilities. The worst teachers I ever had either had the wrong attitude completely or they had something happening in their personal life that distracted them from their job. Understanding any person is the best way to help them thrive at anything. Any subject becomes simpler when a student realises it is within their capabilities and they become engaged or even passionate.
