Each lesson will start with me explaining and going through the syllabus material. In order to do this, the student and I will discuss what topics they are finding difficult so we can work through them together. Once the student is familiar and comfortable with the topic we have chosen to cover, I will prepare exam questions along with model answers. Initially, we will go through some practice and example questions to get familiar with the style of questions you would see in an exam. Once complete, the aim will be to have the student go through example questions themselves so I can track their progress and ensure they have a firm understanding of the topic and concepts we have covered in the lesson. Hopefully, by the end of each session, we will have covered both the syllabus content and related exam questions. I will give the student feedback on how to improve their answers and approach to exam questions, if necessary, and then we can move on to deciding what content to cover in the following week.
I tend to follow the syllabus in order to make sure that all topics in the syllabus are covered but often it is more helpful if the students themselves have a list of topics that they would like to focus on. This allows the lessons to be more tailored to the specific needs of the student. However, some students prefer to have a teacher guide them through the syllabus and in this case, the topics we cover each week will be predetermined but subject to change if requested.
