I have previous experience tutoring two Year 11s through GCSE Physics and my younger brother through Year 10-11 maths homework and exam questions. To do this, I used a mixture of textbook based learning and the active recall, and then found exam questions based on the knowledge of the section they had just seen using sites like
In harder topics which required more complex application of knowledge, I did guided walk throughs with explanations. I also provided resources to tutees for finding more questions outside of lessons and also exam specifications to go through to find their weakest topics. Lastly, I used previous, in school assessments on topics and asked them to talk me through all questions they got wrong and explain why they lost marks and what they would need to do next time.
I found this very effective, as although questions are almost never repeated, tutees recognised patterns in answering questions that stuck in their long term memory (which is a much more natural/useful way to learn rather than forced memorising).
Overall, everything I did was suggested by all of my A level/GCSE teacher and I found they were all effective.
