I am an English tutor with 6 years experience and a background in Kumon tutoring. The way I usually structure my lessons is firstly creating aligning with the parent and student to understand what the goals are of both and what they want to achieve.
I can then create an overall lesson plan with key milestones and check-ins to ensure the students progress.
Within each lesson I allocate time to look at source material to begin with whether that is studying a play/book or an essay question or topic. Once we have spent some time reviewing the material we can then have a discussion around it. I encourage a lot of student participation so the questions I ask usually are leading, designed for the student to think and formulate answers. I may throw in some hard ones! But that is to push the student and encourage them to think in a new way!
Once we get the discussion going we now need to actually put it into words. We can then go through documents or write up paragraphs collaboratively or if the student is confident they can lead.
By the end of the lesson we need to make sure that we covered the goals we set out at the beginning of the lesson so I will usually ask the student if they feel comfortable in what they have learnt.
In terms of homework that really depends on the student/teacher so we can discuss how that should be set up. If there is homework then we can allocate time at the beginning of the next lesson to review.
Overall this is a collaborative process between student, parent and myself. It requires open communication so if there is anything that needs to change or done less/more let me know and the programme can be adjusted!
