Having been Russell Group educated with a first-class degree and Masters in English, I believe that I possess the strong academic background and zeal required to tutor.
The demands of working for the Harris Federation for most of my career heightened my management, planning and organisational skills. It opened many doors for the professional development that I feel makes me a strong candidate. I have experience in teaching all year groups from Years 7 to 13, as well as mentoring trainee teachers for several years. At Harris Crystal Palace, I was the Deputy Head of English as well as the Whole School Literacy Lead. Both positions were an avenue for me to develop my leadership abilities, contributing to some outstanding outcomes – for example, our school becoming one of the leading institutions in the country for the usage of the online platform Bedrock Vocabulary. I developed both the Year 9 and 10 curriculums, the success of which led to their being implemented by other schools in the Federation. The Year 9 medium term plans were particularly praised by external organisations such as The Black Curriculum for their diversity. Further, I thoroughly enjoyed governing our World Book Day events for two years across all subject areas, as well as developing a whole-school literacy curriculum for tutor time.
As the Literacy Lead, I ensured the running of a Book Club for Key Stage Three and began a school newspaper with the same cohort entitled ‘The Palace Way’. Additionally, I co-ordinated Harris Crystal Palace’s involvement in the Harris Federation-wide Spelling Bee competitions and the London ‘Speak Out’ Challenge. These examples, I believe, convey my ability to contribute to a varied and exciting learning programme that simultaneously challenges and enlightens young people, as well as my willingness to go above and beyond for students outside of the classroom. This role also entailed line managing other members of the English Department, as well as collaborating with staff outside of English (including the SEN team, teachers of other subject areas and external organisations), skills which I believe will be of great use to work within any school. I was regularly commended for my oversight of the English team, earning the respect of both students and colleagues through my honest but professional approach. I am committed to making English a subject that students not only learn at school or online, but that enriches and improves their lives outside of it.
