Lessons would be largely influenced by what the pupil wants to work on. We can have a chat about the areas you want to improve on and work from there.
I will often start with a casual conversation to see how much you already know and understand. We will then start to talk through the areas that the student is less clear on. This will then be practiced through a series of interactive activities such as Kahoot games and flashcard practice. Once the basic knowledge is understood well, we can move onto trying to use this knowledge in exam style questions. Again, this will start as a simple conversation; allowing the pupil to organise their thoughts verbally can make it easier when they move to written answers.
Brainstorming techniques will be taught to encourage the pupil to think independently and once again organise their thoughts. In order to teach good essay writing skills we will break down the essays into parts and examine each individually, outlining what the exam board is looking for.
Essay planning will also be covered, allowing the pupil to bring all their knowledge into a concise plan. We will learn to associate key words with larger pieces of knowledge so that a short 50 word plan can cover all the information needed in an essay.
The method of this will vary depending on the age and stage of the student but as I said, I will be led by what the pupil wants to do. Overall, I want the pupil to enjoy their learning as much as possible and create a more relaxed and informal environment than school. This way, I hope that my students will be more engaged and eager to learn!
