I am an enthusiastic teacher who believes that enjoyment is the most important element to learning any instrument. I have a very approachable style of teaching, encouraging the pupil to look beyond the notes and discover their passion for music. I am willing to work towards exams in a more structured approach if this is desired, and I have many years of experience with the ABRSM examination board and can offer a large amount of expertise in getting pupils ready for their music exams. Lessons are of course available on a more casual basis for those just looking to enjoy a new hobby.
I pride myself in adapting my approach to each individual, whether they are looking to set themselves challenges, improve their knowledge and understanding behind the pieces they are learning, or simply enjoy making music with their chosen instrument. For younger learners, I use a variety of games, flashcards, etc, which encourages learning in a variety of fun and different ways to help make the lessons engaging and the information easier to understand and recall. For older students, I use a process known as Simultaneous Learning, meaning that all areas of learning are approached, leading to a well-rounded understanding of the instrument, its music, and the theory behind the notes. I check in regularly with my students to check that they understand but also that they are enjoying the process and that we are headed in the right direction for them. For most of my students, I also use the help of apps, including musical games and theory apps, which can help with visual learners, and to help maintain engagement during lessons.
