Hello everyone. I am a pianist and I would like my 5 year old son to learn to play the piano later in life. In your opinion, what is the ideal age to start piano lessons?

Hello John. I would advise he starts learning early. 4 to 5 years of age wouldn't be a bad idea.

Hi John! I don't necessarily think that there is an ideal age. However, I do think that the younger the better. During piano lessons, the child wil develop their musicality but also develop other skills such as multitasking and finger dexterity that will be useful for them later. I believe that 5 or 6 is a good age to start playing the piano :) If you need any details do not hesitate to contact me. I am an experienced piano tutor who is currently teaching students of all ages ( including a few 4 years old students!) You can find my ad in my profile. Regards, Antigoni

It is usually recommended to start piano lessons between the ages of 6 and 9 for a child who wants to learn the instrument.

Hello John, Five is not too young to start learning! I have taught several young students of this age, and it can be very rewarding. The most important thing is to install a passion for music early on so that it never becomes a chore. If you are interested I would be happy to offer a free taster session for your son.

Hi John! 5years old would be a fine age to start learning the piano! But remember to be patient, it takes longer to grasp certain ideas when you are younger! Hope this helps :)

Hi there, It definitely depends on the kid, but I find that 6 or 7 is a good age to start generally. Before that, there are all sorts of ways to get your child into music, such as singing, dancing, and playing with percussion instruments, all of which I recommend! I hope that helps! Joe

Hi John, I would say it is all about whether the interest in the piano is able to develop. Most children even up to 10, take time to focus their interests. I would say give it a try and find music that your son can relate to. If he enjoys the lessons after 6-8 weeks and wants to practice after these weeks are up, then the learning progress is certainly possible. Also finding a fun book really helps, check out the piano adventures website for all the different book types there are, you can even preview them on Amazon sometimes.

Hi Laura! As a piano tutor myself, I have had children of different ages beginning to learn and have found any age is a good time. I think over 4 years old is a good number to go from. I myself began when I was 8 1/2 and began doing graded exams aged 11 with finally completing my grade 8 at age 16. The most important aspect to me is the child wanting to learn the instrument. I hope this answer was helpful!

I like to start children from a young age, say 4 or 5 but offer "mini" lessons that last for only 15 minutes. This way they stay engaged.

I prefer starting students around age 8 for focus & critical thinking reasons.
