When can I use the informal in French?

I’m not sure when it’s appropriate to use the informal/formal in French, and I don’t want to sound rude.

The informal pronouns can be used with people you're familiar with e.g friends and family. The formal ones are use with people you're not familiar with e.g people you're meeting for the first time.
