In 1917, the proton was discovered by Ernest Rutherford. Rutherford was a New Zealand-born British physicist and chemist who is known for his pioneering work in the field of nuclear physics. He discovered the proton while investigating the structure of atoms using a technique known as alpha particle scattering.In his experiment, Rutherford fired a beam of alpha particles (positively charged particles) at a thin sheet of gold foil. He observed that most of the alpha particles passed through the foil, but a small number were deflected at large angles, suggesting the presence of a dense central core in the atoms. Rutherford interpreted this central core as being composed of protons, which he named "proton" from the Greek word for "first".Rutherford's discovery of the proton was a major breakthrough in the understanding of the structure of atoms, and it led to the development of the nuclear model of the atom, which is still widely accepted today.
