I have taught in a primary setting for seven years, and I have found that no child is the same. I seek the student's full understanding of a concept before stretching any learning. I prefer to break every problem down into separate exercises before bringing them together to achieve full understanding. It is about the child's confidence in a subject, and their ability to tackle the next step.
