Advert description
Hi I’m Tom! I'm a musician and teacher specialising in guitar. I graduated from the University of Westminster in 2019 with a degree in Music. Alongside this I have been a member of multiple bands, playing live shows in venues all across London. I played both my own music and in the bands of other artists to help improve my musicianship. I have also worked behind the scenes within the music industry and have a wide and varied knowledge of the technical side.
I pride myself on being able to transfer my passion and enthusiasm into my students helping them engage on a deeper level. This ultimately helps build that crucial relationship between teacher and student. I have had several years experience teaching pupils within a band setup where I taught up to 9 children at a time across a range of instruments. As well as this I have taught via music services at schools on a 1 to 1 basis.
I believe that 1 to 1 lessons are unmatched when it comes to progress and building a solid foundation to teach on. I would run my lesson split into sections, the first being technique, using finger exercises and warm ups. These are very important in building muscle memory and making sure the pupil is learning the right techniques when it comes to finger placement. The next section would be more practical based in the sense of learning an actual piece (from tab, chord charts or listening/memory) whether it be part of the Grade or a free choice.
It is important to me that my students learn songs and music that they actually enjoy themselves. This, in my experience, really helps drive interest. It is also important that during the lessons we are continuously developing listening skills, as a musicians ear is his best friend.
I also like to spend time improvising over backing tracks to favourite song or even through composition. To end I would then go over some music theory based on what we have learnt so that the lessons comes back around full circle, helping solidify understanding. I will also provide material for my students to take home to practice such as scales, finger exercises, chord sheets, backing tracks and more.
Ultimately I will tailor my lessons around what my students wants to be learning. These are YOUR lessons so I want you to be getting out of it exactly what you want, either simply for enjoyment or to meet specific goals and requirements.
