First I analyse the areas where the student needs to make further development either by looking at previous work they have done or through assessing them as they talk and do ongoing exercises for me. Then I use my experience and knowledge of their learning goals (e.g. exam type, the grade they are hoping to achieve) to work out a strategy to help them progress in an achievable, stretching and realistic way. Then I engage them in positive, enjoyable and stimulating teaching, using quality materials, providing feedback that is both affirming but also challenging, to create new learning and performance habits.
