Advert description
I have a Batchelors degree in English and History, my main historical passion is the English Civil War. The politics of the period is fascinating, especially when you consider that so much change could have occurred, but it didn't. A number of issues that were central to the conflict were still very relevant into the Victorian period. I feel that primary sources are vital to understanding the conflict and I do encourage and will actively introduce primary sources into the lessons. I do encourage a lively debate surrounding the subject and expect a certain passion for learning to be brought to lessons. I do also encourage further reading on the subject area and I will always support my students to examine and ask questions of history.
As I have a degree in both English and History I feel that students would benefit from that dual knowledge, English and history are complementary subjects, one fuels the other. I have an excellent knowledge of the critical theories that are used when studying English literature, how to search for the appropriate secondary source and how to apply them in writing in order to maximise the students potential. These skills are transferable when teaching history, some of the classics of English literature can certainly be considered primary sources i.e. Mary Barton by Elizabeth Gaskell can be utilized by the history student, Gaskell was after all a contemporary author and witness to working class living conditions of the Victorian period. This blending of literary and historical knowledge allows me to offer students a wider and more diverse understanding of historical events.
