Teachers need to be flexible, have compassion, patience and drive to connect with students. I would devise lesson plans that will ensure students understand the material. I will adapt my teaching style to each student to help them learn effectively. Engaged students aren’t just absorbing content, they try to make meaning of what is being studied by putting in intellectual effort and working through the challenging ideas they are presented with. Engaged learners must feel motivated and excited to learn and I do that by allowing the students to take ownership of their learning by allowing them to guide lessons so they are engaged and motivated. I think group work is important sometimes to emphasise teamwork and communication skills so I intend to incorporate this into my lessons. With past experiences, I tutored the younger years at my secondary school and learned that the students are most motivated when they understand the content and in order to comprehend the content, different ideas must be explored. For example, while studying a novel, I encouraged acting out the storyline, memorising quotes, recognising themes using mind maps ect. These techniques allow the student to explore the ideas being presented better. As a Psychology student myself, I am constantly learning and teaching myself material and through the years I have recognised that I am a visual learner which means I use kind maps and pictures to encourage memorisation and comprehension, however a friend prefers to write practice essays to test his memory. This has shown me that everyone learns differently and teaching has to be adapted for the student.
